The Louisville Municipal School District is excited to once again host its Summer Enrichment Program, often known as the HEROES program. Beginning June 2, the program will run through the 27th of June.
LMSD was elated to once again receive the 21st Century Grant, which makes the HEROES program possible. This summer, enrichment focuses on more than just reading and math - this year, the HEROES program focuses on STEM - Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.
The STEM career paths are highly sought positions in the work world, and it is the privilege of LMSD to prepare students for this type of work.
WLCTC Director and Assistant Superintendent Belinda Swart joined WLSM live in the studio for Workforce Wednesday. They agreed that the WLCTC facility is the perfect place to host this enrichment program.
Swart shared that part of the 21st Century funds will go to purchase 3D printers, virtual reality googles, drones, and robotics kits. Last year, WLCTC procured drones for use at its facility. McDaniel shared that drones could be utilized in multiple ways by the Career Tech Center, including forestry.
K-2 students will enjoy a virtual kick-off on June 2. On June 3 and 4, the program "ThunderCat Boat Racing" is featured. Other programs this month for this age group include a study on honeybees, python hunting, and a Coast Guard-inspired Search and Rescue Mission.
Greades 3 - 5 will also get to enjoy a python hunting adventure, but they will focus on coral reef restoration, a "birdgency" and a "halo jump."
Grades 6 - 8 will study wild bird sanctuaries, experience a high-altitude balloon launch, and study parasites.
Swart added that LMSD will once again participate in the summer feeding program, June 2 - 27 and July 7 - 18. Breakfast will be served from 7:30 - 8:30 AM, and lunch will be served between 10:30 and 12:30.
She also added that registration for school will also take place next week. One June 3-4, registration will take place between 9-3 with the employees taking a lunch break at noon. On June 5, registration takes place between 1 - 6.
City schools - Fair, Eiland, Louisville Elementary, and LHS - will hold registration at the Louisville Safe Room ("the dome"). Noxapater and Nanih Waiya will hold registration at their respective campuses during the same hours.
Information about registration for both new and returning students may be found here:
