Freddie Poindexter, Jr. went head to head in a run-off election in late April. He was able to win the majority of the vote in this run-off, and, with that, he also made history in Macon. Poindexter is not only the youngest to ever win the mayoral seat in Macon, but he is also the first African American to lead the city as well.
Poindexter will take office on July 1, 2025, but he is already hitting the ground running. He outlined multiple initial projects he wants to tackle upon entering office.
First, Poindexter noted he is prioritizing the training and equipping of the Macon Police Department. “A robust police presence is essential to ensuring that all citizens feel safe and secure in our community.” Next, he aims to restore the parks and recreation areas of the city. He added that all three parks in Macon’s city limits are closed, “but, with the collaboration and support of the community, I am confident we can swiftly reopen these vital spaces. Revitalizing these parks will provide areas for family gatherings and safe environments where children can play and thrive.”
One project that is heavy on Poindexter’s heart is establishing a Boys’ and Girls’ Club in Macon. “Presently, we lack a dedicated space for children to engage in after-school programs or simply enjoy recreational activities. Creating this facility will provide our youth with a safe and enriching environment, allowing them to play, learn, and grow.”
Poindexter added that he is enthusiastic about working with the community on these projects and “creat(ing) a better future for all residents of Macon.”
Poindexter has a wealth of experience in making things happen in the community. He credited his “invaluable” experience as the Parks and Recreation Activities Coordinator in equipping him with experience in working with various community organizations. He has also worked with Noxubee County’s own Jeffery Simmons, former Mississippi State standout and current Tennessee Titans player. Poindexter has worked alongside Simmons as the General Manager of Simmons’ Noxubee Titans Youth Sports Program. The Mayor-elect noted that he had many meaningful conversations with local organizations regarding the problem of crime and violence, particularly where youth are concerned. “Through these conversations, it became evident that the challenges we face are often rooted in behavior among our younger generations, compelling me to seek a role in addressing these issues,” he noted.
Poindexter is also the Founder of the Noxubee High Alumni Association.
“Unity” is the common denominator he believes will lead to a strengthening of the city of Macon. “I am committed to working collaboratively with community members to develop effective solutions that promote a safer, stronger, and more connected community for all.”
