A local student athlete has been chosen to represent the Mississippi Band of Choctaws in the showcase. He is the only player chosen from the state of Mississippi.

A total of 50 athletes were selected for this prestigious honor.

The Showcase highlights Native American

high school students that possess the talent to continue playing at the next level. The Atlanta Braves host this event; it is an effort to provide both access and opportunity for diverse baseball talent. While at the showcase, these student athletes will have the opportunity to train with former MLB players as well as the opportunity to play in front of both college and Major League Baseball scouts.

This often means an opportunity for those who might not otherwise have such a chance.

On Saturday, June 21, the athletes will participate in a pro-style workout courtesy of the Marquis Grissom Baseball Association. Four to six players will be selected to participate in a Home Run Derby competition.

On Sunday, all participants will be divided into two teams. Former MLB players and coaches will lead the respective teams. TrackMan Baseball will be used to capture important statistics to assist players in improving their game. Native American mentors will also interact with the participants in small groups over the weekend.

Hickman just completed his sophomore year at Nanih Waiya Attendance Center. Winston County salutes Sanjiya on this huge achievement, and we know he will represent his school and the Mississippi Band of Choctaws well!
