While the Mississippi State Baseball team was taking on Florida State in Tallahassee, the future head coach of the program was said to be on a plane headed to Starkville. Some Bulldog fans charted the MSU jet during said game on "X" (formerly Twitter), and the plane landed just after a tough loss to FSU in the second Bulldog game of the day.

Brian O'Connor was rumored late last week to "be a frontrunner" for the head baseball coach spot previously held by Chris Lemonis. Lemonis was fired late in the 2025 season.

O'Connor should be no stranger to the Bulldog baseball program. GenesPage.com notes that O'Connor has stood in an opposing dugout in at least four games against the Bulldogs throughout his career.

O'Connor has a laundry list of accomplishments - with the most important being the head coach of a successful College World Series team - that make him an attractive hire and gives the Bulldog faithful hope for upcoming seasons. O'Connor's teams have made a total of 18 NCAA Tournament appearances, captured nine regional championships, as well as seven super-regional titles. His 2015 team defeated the SEC's own Vanderbilt in the 2015 CWS after meeting Vandy previously in the 2014 CWS. O'Connor is a three-time National Coach of the Year and was named to the ABCA Hall of Fame in 2024. (statistics courtesy of GenesPage.com)

O'Connor has also grown the program at his previous school, the University of Virginia. Not only did attendance grow under O'Connor, but his overall record at UVA is 923-388-2. He is ranked third among active college coaches for winning percentage.

On Thursday, June 4, Bulldog fans are invited to welcome Coach O'Connor officially to Starkville and Mississippi at 7 PM at Dudy Noble Field.
