Tuesday, June 17, was a bittersweet mid-month meeting for the City of Louisville Board of Aldermen.
Earlier this year, Ward 1 Alderman Drew Massey decided that he would not run again, citing family obligations as his reasoning. Tuesday night was his final board meeting.

The camaraderie of this particular board was on display as Mayor Will Hill planned a bit of a surprise for Massey, as well as in the heartfelt goodbyes offered by the board members. As only he could do, Massey addressed the board, utilizing humor as only he could.
Overall, everyone expressed the idea that Massey and his dedication as well as his positive approach to the business of the city will be greatly missed.
Each member took the time to express their enjoyment in working with Massey over the last two terms. Mayor Pro Tempore and Alderman Eugene Crosby noted how much he enjoyed working with Massey over the years as well as his appreciation for Massey's dedication to his constituents. "I wish you well and your family well," said Crosby. This was echoed by City Clerk Wanda Hudson as well as City Attorney Taylor Tucker. Tucker added, "You have sat on two terms of two boards that have worked really well together. Both of these boards have had a deep dedication to the betterment of the city. Plus, you (Massey) have made it enjoyable."
Cody Ming, L. M. Claiborne, and Steven Hampton all noted they would miss the companionship of Massey.
As Drew was addressing the board and all attending, his family walked in, a pleasant surprise for Massey.
Massey was presented with a resolution honoring his service.
Massey's last official day as an Alderman is June 30. Bill McGee won the seat in municipal elections held earlier this year.
