Two senior residents, Willie Therman Eichelberger and James 'Turkey' Jordan, of the Center Ridge Community were tired of seeing litter around their community. Therefore, they decided to start a Center Ridge Intiative for the Beautification of Winston. They decided to show how easily and quickly it can be done. Four of them met at Young Crossing and Harthorn Roads and commenced to pick up the litter on Friday, March 6, 2026. It took them approximately 20 minutes to clean the area. This is just the beginning for them. The big Pick It Up Day will be, Saturday, March 21, 2026, 9:00 a.m. - 1 p.m. Volunteers can meet in Dean Park at 9:00 a.m. to see the map with roads to be picked up. Bring a grabber, if you have one. They have gloves and water. Wille Therman said, "If an 83 year old senior can do it, so can others that are younger. Let's have pride in our community and Winston County. STOP LITTERING. I was in the US Army in Germany and saw a beautiful clean country. When I came back to my community, I was disgusted to see the litter. It is time to clean it up." Richard Moncrief and Valarie Smith, of the Friends of Dean Park, joined with the two seniors to start the Pick Up Initiative.
