This week, most of Mississippi has been under a heat advisory - multiple days of rain disappeared to make way for the first heat warnings of summer 2025.
The Weather Channel is predicting more rain for next week, but if you've lived in Mississippi for any amount of time, you know those predictions can change rapidly.
With July and August - and the relentless heat expected during those months - it's important to know what to do during a heat wave.
Often the most important thing is to prepare ahead of steamy temperatures.
During a heat wave, air conditioning systems often break down. An older system may break down due to the overload of extreme heat. If you haven't had an HVAC professional come out to check your system this spring, it might be a good idea to contact someone BEFORE the system quits working properly.
It's important to stay hydrated during extreme temperatures. Water is the best way to do this, but those who are working outdoors may want to drink Gatorade to replenish electrolytes lost. It's important to avoid sugary sodas as they actually add to dehydration.
Speaking of outdoor work, it is best to work outdoors - for example, in a garden or doing yard work - before 10:00 AM and after 6:00 PM. Wear loose-fitting clothing in lightweight fabrics.
Check one your neighbors, particularly the elderly as they are more susceptible to overheating rapidly.
While we may think we are accustomed to extreme heat, it is always a good idea to prepare and be smart about outdoor activities during a heatwave. Check on your neighbors, stay hydrated, and plan activities outside the "heat of the day" hours.
