General Elections in Municipalities Around Mississippi Tuesday

On Tuesday, many municipalities held elections for city officials, including mayors, city councilmen, and boards of aldermen.


Locally, Noxapater, Ackerman, Starkville, Columbus, Kosciusko, Philadelphia, Meridian, West Point and Jackson elected their city leaders.


In Noxapater, incumbent Mayor Sammy Carter defeated Chris Wells to retain his seat. The Board of Aldermen for Noxapater will have a few new members as well: Faye Glass. Brandon Burrage and Bobby Pierce will join incumbent aldermen Terry Kelly and Tommy Bartholomew.


Ackerman has a new mayor in Lauren Carson, who defeated the incumbent Dale Reid. (Please note WLSM is waiting on official results to announce the Board of Aldermen for the Town of Ackerman.)


In Columbus, Stephen Jones was elected the new Mayor. For City Council Ward I, Ethel Taylor Stewart received the most votes. Lavonne Harris earned the most votes in Ward 4, and Gary Jefferson takes Ward 5. The winner of Ward 6 is Jason Spears.


In Starkville, incumbent Lynn Spruill retained her seat as Mayor.


In Philadelphia, Jim Fulton was elected the new mayor. Percy Bland, current mayor of Meridian, will retain his seat.
